ATI Radeon HD 5770 in MacPro 1,1

I've searched all over these forums, there was some talk about the ATI Radeon HD 5770 working in a 1,1 MacPro, but I never really found a definitive answer. In the apple catalog someone posted this:

"It should be fine ATI cards unlike nvidia are built to be compatible with both EFI 32 and EFI 64 interfaces and i know the 4870 is fully compatible even with the first generation intel mac pro some people were saying that the 5770 takes up 2 pci express slots but that is just false i havent had the chance to try it myself since my 4870 is enough for me but i am sure it should work just fine"

Any final word on this? I'm eager to upgrade.

I would be cautious since one big change was going from PCI Express 1.1 to 2.1.
The impact here is that the 2.1 bus supplies much more power. On the picture on the apple store I dont see any aux power cable on the video card. It is possible that the card will run, but start crashing as soon as you start taxing it.
My GT8800 doesnt have the aux power and it works, but the 5770 is a bigger beast.
My frame rates in Starcraft II suck, even in bootcamp mode!

Thought I'd chime in with some news;

1. 5770 arrived today, (MC742ZM/A). Popped it in slot 1 with 6 pin pwr cable and no issues. Started up as if no changes had been made, (still see the grey boot screen and everything I expect to see). The card makes very little noise.

2. My Expansion slot Utility is set up thus -

3. I am running 10.7.2 11C74 Server. Mac Pro 1,1 with 4GB RAM and an Alu 30 via DVI.

4. Splinter Cell Conviction now runs.

5. Life is good.

You seem to have plugged the biggest rat-holes with more RAM and an SSD -- do you have TRIM enabled with a third-party Utility such as TRIM Enabler?

Are you using Ethernet or WiFi? If WiFi, what does you display of Option click on the MenuBar icon look like?

And how many other Networks can you see?

My nVidia 7300 GT has died. I want replace it with an HD 5770. But I'm still running 10.4.11. I don't mind upgrading to Snow Leopard. But since my computer won't boot up, I can't install Snow Leopard before installing the new card. Does anybody know if the card will work at all with 10.4.11? Perhaps with limited resolutions or something, but enough to allow me to boot up and then install Snow Leopard? (As it is now, the computer will not boot up at all, even off of a DVD or from an external hard drive, although it will boot up in safe mode. Others have reported the same issue and attributed it to the video card. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2801529?start=0&tstart=0 )

Hello CRboy27. So, do you actually own a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) and installed an ATI RADEON HD5770 like the one are selling in apple store http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC742ZM/A/ati-radeon-hd-5770-graphics-upgrade- kit-for-mac-pro-%28mid-2010%29and this is working OK for you? I have one Mac Pro 1,1, the original video card got broken and need to buy a new one. This HD5770 is going to work to me? However, I understand that you kept the originally shipped NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, so you are running both cards in your machine.

Bringing this up to the talking, it is possible that just using the 5770 is not going to be enough to me, and my computer won't run, don't you think? I will appreciate your advice.

Thanks in advance

Hi all, very informative thread, many thanks for all the contributions.

My reason for posting:

I'm running the 5770 on 1.1 MacPro,10.7.5 for around 6 months, purchased from apple store. Easy install and I've not had any direct issues from this new card. Runs 2 x 23" LG HD Monitors.

The issue I've had which may or may not be related to the card is stuttery video streaming on various sites(youtube, facebook, vimeo etc) The streaming is done via Firefox latest release and I've had the issue on previous versions of Firefox since the install of the card.

Has anyone had this issue at all with their 5770?

If not, can anyone point me in the direction of a fix to this issue, I'm just ruling out the 5770 for now as it may be something else which is completly unknown to me at the moment.

Thanks all, hope your are well wherever you are 😁

Edit: I found this page on apple site - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2848 I contradicts what apple shop said when I purchased this card, it seems it is now no longer the correct card!? Confused...

You may have issues playing back COPY PROTECTED video, such as DVDs, using this card according to this article:

Mac Pro: Using ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card with Mac Pro released before 2010

Other than that issue, the graphics card itself is never the source of such problems.

Perfomance problems that could produce stuttering include using a slow WiFi connection, problems on your Hard drive, or simply not enough RAM to do everything you are trying to do at once.

Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used

How can anyone? Apple has yet to ship, and anything would be speculative, and using PC 5770s.

Will ATI use EFI64 or stay with using EBC as they have done in the past (and which would be universal for any Mac Pro) is still 'up in the air' and therefore unavailable for probably a week?

You have a 16x slot already, the bottom, which was where the X1900s went, and not an issue. I have double wide in there on mine.

Those thin single slot cards are for low power under 75W and to fit in the alternate slots but really sacrifice in design.

Lastly, the 5770 may be a step down or at least not a step up in performance other than more VRAM.

Has anyone tested the Mini DisplayPort on a 5770 in MacPro1,1 (first generation, 2006-2007)? I am interested in this because that connector can carry 10-bit per channel color. The DVI connector only carries 8-bit color.

I have one report from someone who tested this configuration, and found that a 5770 on MacPro1,1 sometimes failed to detect a monitor connected via Mini DisplayPort. He occasionally had to unplug and reinsert the cable to get the monitor to light up.

Note that not all cards with a DisplayPort can output 10-bit color. Very few monitors can display 10-bit color depth. And very few apps can manage it (Photoshop CS5 has partial support). But this will be more common in the future. The advantage shows up in subtle ways (smoother gradients, etc.).
