ATI Radeon HD 5770 in MacPro 1,1

I've searched all over these forums, there was some talk about the ATI Radeon HD 5770 working in a 1,1 MacPro, but I never really found a definitive answer. In the apple catalog someone posted this:

"It should be fine ATI cards unlike nvidia are built to be compatible with both EFI 32 and EFI 64 interfaces and i know the 4870 is fully compatible even with the first generation intel mac pro some people were saying that the 5770 takes up 2 pci express slots but that is just false i havent had the chance to try it myself since my 4870 is enough for me but i am sure it should work just fine"

Any final word on this? I'm eager to upgrade.

> it won't play and video or sound. Final Cut Pro X will load, import video clips, etc, but won't play the video. Can anyone suggest anything? There seem to be many people here with the same setup not reporting any issues.

Won't Play Video - common thread here and on Lion Community, including but not limited to Safari

I doubt the 5770 and playing video are related. Lion? maybe.

+1 on this is separate from the support for 5770 in 10.6.8+ in MacPro1,1's.

Thanks for the replies, Grant and The hatter. Looks like it was a false alarm, after testing various video applications I worked out that nothing involving sound played properly, including preview from the Finder using the space-bar; BBC iPlayer, YouTube, etc. I was thrown a little bit as everything else worked fine, Finder, Aperture, Word, etc. So I re-started (after re-installing Flash) and Final Cut Pro X worked fine, as well as everything else, panic over.

I'm guessing it might have had something to do with waking from sleep?! I don't really know, but it's fine now. Long may it continue :-)

I've had a 5770 installed in my MP 1.1 for over a year now with no problems - I don't really have a huge problem now, but since upgrading to Lion 7.3 I frequently have to "detect displays" in preferences to get it to notice my second monitor on start up and waking from sleep. This never happened with Snow Leopard.

I'm using miniport to DVI adapters from Apple.

It's not a biggie as its very quick to fix, but maybe someone here can explain why this is happening now when it didn't before?

cheers

Hi all, great info--thanks! I have a few questions. First, I have a 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 with the Nvidia 7300 GT running OSX 10.6.8. I've been told by a friend's buddy who is a Genius that the card is on it's way out based on reported symptoms.

So, this brings me to installing an Apple ATI Radeon 5770. I bought one from my local store and the box was a returned item, retaped and sold at a 5% discount. I'm reading about the video power cord but didn't find one in the box. Is it included or is it sold separately? If it's sold separately, my plan is to get one and try this opened box 5770. If it works, I might return the mess and buy an new unopened one for piece of mind. 5% isn't much of a discount but it was the only one they had.

The power cable does come in the box, so I'd suggest going back to the store where you got it and mention you need the cable. It won't work without it.

I would also suggest updating your systemt to at least 10.7 to get updated drivers for the 5770, and purchasing as much ram as possible. The 2007 MacPro won't be able to run 10.8. I have the same machine as you and I'm running the 5770 with 12g of system ram.

Good luck

Go for the 5770 - the 5% discount for an opened, returned product should surely still entitle you to a power cable!

Also, while I've no idea on Mountain Lion requirements and less interest, you might appreciate knowing that my 2006 Mac Pro would not originally have been able to run Final Cut X - with the new video card no problems. As many modern apps are making use of VRAM getting a decentish video card is probably THE best way to give an old Mac Pro a new lease of life.

Guess what? My machine has been stable for a week and a half (since about Sept 17th). The only things different than when the MP had the problems was that I removed the card and shot canned air on it (I'd done this while in the case plus vacuumed everything earlier but it still acted up). Not much dust was there to blow away with this last effort.

Another factor was that our weather here cooled down significantly and we began to run the A/C a lot as well as a room fan to help. I'm thinking that those early hot temps may have been what caused it to freeze. My new MP 2.66 6-core is here so can't wait to set it up. I've delayed due to busy workload and that the old MP is running ok. Thoughts on what happened?

kutatz-

I only see 4gb memory

Then some of your original 16GB of memory has failed. The Mac Pro 65lb tower uses Error Correcting Code DIMMs, so it can quickly determine when modules are grossly malfunctioning. If that can be determined at Startup, those modules are marked "not present" and will not show up in:

About this Mac > ( More Info ) > Memory

or will show up at half their expected size, or with a status other than "OK".

If these are aftermarket DIMMs that still have the Vendor's sticker, reputable Mac Vendors provide a lifetime replacement warranty, so you should contact them for replacement at no charge.

I put the 5770 in my Mac Pro 1.1 about a month ago and just recently have been having some erratic start up issues with the screen showing the apple logo and spinning wheel but when it goes to my login/password screen, the video goes to multi colored lines.......kinda like the white "snow" on an old tv.

I can screen share and see the computer is properly booted so I'm 99.9% sure its either a defect with the card or apple's reported "anomalies" when using in pre 2010 mac pros.

Should I return the card or accept that this is an anomaly?
