This is a browser issue, isn’t it? And since this is an issue in Apple’s own browser, doesn’t that mean it’s an Apple problem?
Apple claims:
“Write with Apple Pencil in any text field, and Scribble automatically converts your handwriting into typed text.
Scribble even works when your handwriting extends beyond the edges of the text field.”
Neither of these claims are true. The WhatsApp web app is only one example of many apps and websites where Scribble doesn’t work. And if Meta can’t fix it, how can we expect the operators of much smaller websites to fix it? Surely it is incumbent upon Apple to make it work as they claim it works rather than it to expect others to fix the problem for them?
In any case, rumour has it that Meta are planning to release a version of WhatsApp for noncellular tablets. So there is little reason to expect them to expend resources fixing an iPad-specific problem in a web app when an iPad app is in the offing.
There are a whole raft of things that Google Gboard does far better than Scribble, such as genuinely working in every text field, and allowing precise positioning of the cursor to make corrections with the onscreen keyboard. In Scribble, if I want to correct the spelling or the capitalisation of a word, I have to delete the whole word. That is stupid.
