Command-3 and my photos disappear

I've managed to press 'Command-3' a couple times while trying to assign ratings to a single photo causing all the photos in the current album disappear. I can find them using a library search so they aren't completely gone, but how do I bring them back from the corn fields and back into the album?

I've tried dragging the image from the search result into the album, but nothing happens.

Oh, and what does 'Command-3' do anyway? I can't find it in any menu or the quick reference card.

Thanks Steve! I had a feeling it had something to do with filtering, but I couldn't figure out where the filter controls would be. I dug around in the manual and found the goods on the Query Hud. Pressing Ctrl-` will remove any filtering and as if by magic all my photos showed up.

Oh, and it looks like I pressed Ctrl-3 (not Command-3) to create the filter.

Thank you for the answer to the dreaded Command-3 kiss of death. My entire project of 400+ images vaporized when I tried to assign three stars to an image with Command 3. In Aperture, a three star rating is Command-Option 3. In iPhoto a three star rating is Command 3.
Thank you for the Control ` revival. I couldn't find that key stroke combination after hours with the manual and help forums.
I'm guessing that lots of old iPhoto people will wonder where their images went with this peculiar problem in Aperture.
What is Command 3 supposed to do anyway?

I didn't hit command-3, but related to your problem, I deleted duplicates of images that were stacked together (the second jpg that iphoto created when rotating a photo) and both dissapeared. Only the one I deleted is in the trash, the original is in the aperture library when I look on the finder level, and it says there are more images with the tooltip over the project.

I have cleared the filter, but I can't make the original photos show up.

Oh Willy. When will we ever learn. < </div>

Agreed, RTM is my favorite post over on FCP and Motion forums. But this is just bad design from two points: A) The function is long-established in previous tools like iPhoto and, B) There is no justifiable reason to have a keyboard shortcut that makes everything disappear in a disturbingly destructive manner. It's really scary to have things disappear like that, especially if you're working on an important assembly. I can't think of another pro app on my suite that so easily performs a terrifying result.

Is this operation settable or disable-able?

I have not been able to find Cmd-3 (or -1, or -Space, or -<any key>) in the manual, so this is an undocumented bug as far as I am concerned. The manual (actually the Quick Reference; it is not in the manual) says that the shortcut for filtering by rating is Ctrl-1, or -2, or whatever.

The correct key sequence is error-prone; a single typing error can cause all your pictures to disappear, apparently permanently. This is not what I would expect of a $500 "pro" product.

The filtering is not by rating - a quick check of the search bar reveals that Cmd-<number> searches for images by the keyword preset of that same number. The Search bar even changes from "Showing All" to a badge indicating a keyword is being searched for (the same badge used when an image has a keyword applied).

While I can't find the keyboard command documented either, do you not think it kind of handy to search for images by keyword preset just as quickly as it is to use the preset? And the command make a lot of sense since as you note Control-<number> is a quick search by rating.

Aperture as done everything it should do UI wise - they have indicated a search is under way. The only thing they've not done is document it, but it is definitely not a bug or even bad UI. The UI is fine, if you know about badges and keyword presets. And that's just the thing, with any complex application a little understanding is necessary to use it effectually. I would hate to see a very useful feature dumbed down just because someone sitting down in the first hour of use may not understand it. Why make life a little easier for the first hour and make it slightly harder for the last 50,000+? It's a matter of balance.

The correct key sequence is error-prone; a single

As noted, the search bar changes - get used to looking at it if images "disappear" after you have hit a key sequence.

Now what is a bug is that "Undo" does not undo the application of the keyword filter. That would be my first inclination for a fix when you've accidentally hit a wrong key.
