I have a mac computer thats about 20 years old. How do i find the operating system?

You might want to try this method:


Click the Black Apple icon in the top menu bar.

Choose "About this Mac" from the menu that opens.


You should then be able to see the Mac OS version listed on the small window that opens.

Underneath should be the Mac Model (year) to complete the picture.


With that info:

Searching for "Identify your (MacBook / MacBook Pro / iMac etc)" from Apple Support

would likely reveal more info, and maybe a link to a manual, tech specs etc.

If so, the newest compatible MacOS version will likely be listed, if you can update.


To see if the Mac is listed as "Vintage" or "Obsolete":

You could also scroll to:

Obsolete” and “Vintage” Apple Hardware in the article below:

Finding the macOS Version:



Use Terminal In Recovery Mode:***

  1. Boot in Recovery Mode: [hold down: command + R] upon boot
  2. Click: Utilities menu
  3. Select: Terminal
  4. Use this Command: system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType SPHardwareDataType
  5. Press: return
  6. View: System Version:
