I accidentally installed MacOS on both Macintosh HD and Macintosh Data

I resetted my colleagues macbook because she had some issues with her mac. Went into recovery mode and erased both Macintosh HD and Data.

Once the erasing was done I downloaded Big Sur from the recovery screen onto Macintosh HD. After that I installed all the apps she needed and set everything up so she can work.

After that I wanted to update and install Mac OS Ventura. Once downloaded I was only able to install it on Macintosh Data, HD was greyed out for some reason. I was like, oh well I'm sure it will be fine. But I can't access all the apps I had previously installed.

So I'm pretty sure I have a duplicate on the HD, with duplicate apps that I can't access. How do I properly clean this up? Feels like I made a mess of it now.

Specs: Macbook Air 2020, with M1

MacOS: Ventura 13.0.1

Thanks in advance!

Hi Dennis_Zuiderlicht,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

We'd recommend starting over again with erasing and reinstalling in macOS Recovery. The steps can be found here: How to reinstall macOS

"Reinstall macOS

Reinstalling macOS does not remove data from your Mac. To begin installation, select Reinstall macOS from the utilities window in macOS Recovery, then click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.

Follow these guidelines during installation:

  • If the installer asks to unlock your disk, enter the password you use to log in to your Mac.
  • If the installer doesn't see your disk, or it says that it can't install on your computer or volume, you might need to erase your disk first.
  • If the installer offers you the choice between installing on Macintosh HD or Macintosh HD - Data, choose Macintosh HD.
  • Allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. Your Mac might restart and show a progress bar several times, and the screen might be empty for minutes at a time.

After installation is complete, your Mac might restart to a setup assistant. If you're selling, trading in, or giving away your Mac, press Command-Q to quit the assistant without completing setup. Then click Shut Down. When the new owner starts up the Mac, they can use their own information to complete setup."

If the issue continues after starting over, we'd recommend contacting Apple Support.

Have a fantastic day!
