optimise mac storage

Just a quickie for the fans of Mac storage.

I have an iMac M1 with 500G drive. 2 TB of iCloud storage.

Turned on optimise Mac storage and we now have a Mac that's full of iCloud stuff which I don't want on my Mac. How do I get it off without simply deleting it from iCloud?

I need space on my Mac.

Answers greatly appreciated

iCloud Drive is not an off computer storage facility. It's a syncing feature. Any file you have on the Drive is mirrored on your Mac, even if you have "Optimize Mac Storage" enabled. It will store optimized version on your Mac's drive when it determines that the free storage is small enough. Dom't know what that value is, somewhere around 20% I think.

If you want to have off computer storage I suggest you get an external SSD like OWC's (MacSales.com) 250GB OWC Envoy Pro mini

It has reasonable storage capacity and is small and easy to carry along with your laptop.

Thank you.

I have external storage what i'm doing is replacing it, and moving some stuff around. the small amount of space I am now allowed to use limits this as the disk wont allow large amounts of files to be copied. Whoever thinks that this is a good idea needs to rethink it. If they gave us the option to set the limit that would work. I suppose I will have to work around it.

Perhaps ?

Or if one will have an iCloud of 2 TB Storage Capacity - having a computer with at least the same Drive Capacity to match the iCloud Capacity
