Mac Mini M1 Sends Audio To AirPlay (HomePods) Only

Mac mini M1 running on up to date Ventura. When I select another audio output whether the internal speakers, monitor speakers, or an external DAC my selection gets ignored and audio goes to the HomePods but the output selection still shows my output selection highlighted/selected.

I have tried starting the M1 mini, even tried a complete shutdown. Still have the same problem of audio output only to the HomePods.

Must be some issue the mini M1/macOS combination. Don't have this problem with an iMac running Ventura

You completed some great troubleshooting already. For help with audio routing issues using AirPlay on your M1 Mac mini, test the steps in the guide here: If your Mac switches to a different audio device

Additionally was a restart of the HomePod the sound is incorrect routing to restarted? Change HomePod settings

If the HomePod restart and first guide steps doesn't resolve the issue, test the issue in a new administrator user account. Change Users & Groups settings on Mac

If there's no issue in the new user account, try temporarily removing your login items and test. Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac
