Unable to Ungroup Burst Photos Taken with an iPhone 13

I'm struggling to ungroup burst photos taken with an iPhone 13.

I've selected the photos I want to keep via the iPhone before sending them to my MacBook to edit via Photos. They transfer over as separate photos but when I import them to Photos, they group as a burst. I can't find away to ungroup these photos, apart from importing them individually; editing; deleting; and then selecting the ones I want to keep from the Delete folder to recover. Not a great way to separate a burst.

Under the Image menu there is an error message Invalid: IPXSaveSuggestedBurstTypeFormat and the Select option is greyed out.

Does anyone know of a way to trick Photos into ignoring that these photos were taken in burst mode?

Hi LAMI2502,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities! To save the photos as individuals from the burst on your Mac, follow these steps:

  1. "In the Photos app  on your Mac, double-click the burst in Imports or in the Bursts album in the sidebar.
  2. To select photos from the burst, click the Make a Selection button in the upper-left corner of the photo.
  3. Click each photo that you want to save as an individual photo, then click the circle in the lower-right corner to mark the photo as selected.
  4. When you’ve finished selecting photos, click Done.
  5. Do one of the following:
  • Keep the selected photos and delete the others in the burst: Click Keep Only Selection.
    • The selected photos appear individually in Imports, and unselected photos are placed in Recently Deleted. The burst no longer appears in Imports or in the Bursts album.
  • Make the selected photos appear individually and keep all of the photos in the burst: Click Keep Everything.
    • The selected photos appear individually, and the photo burst remains unchanged."

-View photo bursts in Photos on Mac

If you're following those steps and still don't see the option to select the photos, check to be sure the software on your Mac is running the latest updates: Update macOS on Mac. Outdated software can cause things to not work as expected.

Should it continue, see if you're able to ungroup in safe mode to continue to isolate what's causing this: How to use safe mode on your Mac. Towards the bottom of that article, it suggests additional steps to take for whether it happens in safe mode or not.

Cheers!

Thanks for your response, I appreciate it.

I followed all those steps before making the post. There is no 'Make a Selection' button. As explained in my original post, under the Image menu the Select option is greyed out.

I ended up selecting one photo that I liked pre-edit, and going with that. I will try the Safe mode workaround next time I need to edit Burst photos. Though having read those instructions, I'm defintely not doing a complete reinstall should the problem continue. Hopefully by then Apple would have fixed this bug.

Once again, very many thanks.
