How do I updgrade a Purchase to 4K?

Apple TV is utter crap. There seems to be no way to upgrade a movie that you have already purchased to 4K. How on this good Earth is anyone supposed to manage and curate their iTunes collection. How do you even know that you are getting 4K playback? Why can't Apple FIX this crap? Until they do, I am suspending all purchases from Apple TV.

On what device with the Apple TV app are your trying to watch this content?

I'll ask the question again.. HOW DO I UPGRADE TO 4K?

And I’ll repeat: For titles purchased as SD quality, contact the staff for assistance. For titles purchased in HD quality: no action needed to get 4K, if available. Some titles may not be available in 4K (yet) on this platform, per studio decision. It may also be different per country (4K in one country, but HD in another country).

Do I have to delete the title from my Library and re-purchase it?

Users can’t change Apple’s accounting books, including your purchase history. As mentioned previously, only the staff may be able to make edits with authorization, to facilitate a new purchase.

You cannot even see how much that is going to cost before you make the purchase.

Every title or box set for sale shows its buy price and/or rent price. Not entirely sure how it is shown on a device where in-app purchases are currently not supported (Fire TV, Android TV, Sony TV) [2], as I don’t have one of those.

And for a popular titles like the Harry Potter series you will only get 5.1 Dolby Digital .. no DTS:X mix which is a pretty glaring omission.

No iTunes Store title has DTS/DTS:X sound. Instead select titles offer Dolby Atmos. Other possible audio formats include 7.1, 5.1, and 2.0 audio. As supplied by the studios, in the quality that they wanted it to be.

I will NOT be purchasing anymore content from Apple.

This is a user-to-user forum, not Apple staff. Purchase what you want, or don’t.

If an HD title was purchased via iTunes/Apple TV you will receive an automatic upgrade to 4K if one becomes available. Unfortunately titles originally only available in SD will not even get upgraded to HD if that becomes an option at a later date. You would need to re-purchase that in HD. Dumb, I know. Keep in mind that this only applies to movies bought via iTunes/Apple TV. Anything purchased in HD outside of the Apple ecosystem via other Movies Anywhere retailers like VUDU, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, etc. will remain as HD on your Apple devices even if 4K becomes available at a later date.

There are only two ways that I have found to get around this: The first option is VUDU and Amazon both allow you to upgrade to 4K, if available, at an additional cost (I just wait for something to go on sale, so not to pay full price). The other option is to buy 4K codes for the movie(s) you'd like to upgrade.

For iTunes Store purchases:

No SD (480p) purchase can be “upgraded” to 4K without staff assistance (one instance of a movie title linked to your account, either SD or HD: you normally can’t re-buy a title you already have).

But HD (720p/1080p) purchases are automatically “upgraded” to 4K (2160p) — if 4K is available for that title: they’re the same Store item; no action needed.

You’ll get 4K if the interface says that it is a 4K title, and if your device and screen are 4K capable.

It used to be that SD was a bit cheaper than HD, but that difference is now often equalized by the selling studios, removing any reason to buy SD, as HD purchases can always be streamed at SD resolution too if needed/wanted.

The availability of older 4K titles depends on what the studios have supplied to the iTunes Store. 4K will be available after they upload a 4K version to Apple.

It gets a bit murkier if you use a reciprocal service like Movies Anywhere. Apple will not upgrade for free what you bought elsewhere at a lower quality. Then get your upgrade at the original source.

There is nothing to fix. It works as intended.

This situation is ABYSMAL, and I will NOT be purchasing anymore content from Apple.
