Custom Intervals Workout

Hi,

I tried the custom run workout for the first time this week. Typically I mark out intervals/segments by double tapping the screen on my watch during an "open run", which generates a nice graph in my strava account after I upload the workout. I was hoping the new custom workouts would essentially do this automatically as it transitioned from one interval to the next but the intervals it marked are wrong. The next workout I programmed, I tried double tapping the screen as it instructed me to switch intervals, intending to manually mark them but still having the watch prompt me at the correct times - all this did was advance to the next interval in the program, which made things even worse in the data report at the end.

Any ideas? thanks in advance :)

Hi JCGooch,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're on the right track. Try these steps before your workout, adding as many intervals as needed. Guidance is from Customize workouts on Apple Watch - Apple Support.

"Add warmup, work, recovery, and cooldown intervals

You can tailor your workouts to include a warmup period, repeating work and recovery intervals, and a time to cool down.

  1. Open the Workout app on your Apple Watch.
  2. Turn the Digital Crown to the workout you want to do.
  3. Tap the More button, scroll to the bottom, then tap Create Workout.
  4. Tap Custom, where you can do the following:
    • Add a warmup period: Tap Warmup, then tap Time, Distance, or Open. You can also add a heart rate alert to the warmup period.
    • Add work and recovery intervals: Tap Add, tap Work or Recovery, then choose Time, Distance, or Open.
    • You can add multiple work and recovery intervals.
    • Add a cooldown period: Tap Cooldown, then tap Time, Distance, or Open. When you choose Open, you can also add a heart rate alert.
    • Name the workout: Tap Untitled below Custom Title, then enter a name.

Note: If you’re doing a stationary workout—Elliptical or Pilates, for example—Distance isn’t an option.

5. Tap Create Workout.

The Create Workout button is active only if you’ve added a work or recovery interval."

Best of luck.

thank you - i have done all of that successfully. the problem is that if i do that and then run the work out, the data it streams back to apple fitness or to strava doesnt have the intervals recorded correctly.

for example, last week i programmed a work out with a 10min warm up, three sets of 4min intervals/1min recoveries and then a 5min cool down for a total of 30mins.

strava picked up the work out with "laps" that were 12 seconds, 53 seconds, 9min 5sec, 17sec, 4min 44sec, 15sec and 14min 49sec. so...the data that exported from the watch is basically worthless if i want to check how i did in my four minute intervals. you cant even find the intervals. But, manually tapping the watch screen to mark those intervals (as i would in an "open run" workout) at the correct times just advances me through the programmed work out and screws things up even further.

is there a way to get the intervals/laps to properly correspond to what's custom programmed?
