Lock Screen widgets in iOS 16?

How do I add widgets to my existing Lock Screen wallpaper in iOS 16? Thanks.

You’re right.

i deleted my current Lock Screen wallpaper (with a photo) and started over (with the same photo). This time the Customize process proceeded according to the instructions, and I was able to add widgets.

I have not seen the photo wallpaper limitations discussed in the literature. And I have not personally tried a photo wallpaper. Here's another writeup.

After tapping Customize, here's what I see.

Then after tapping Lock Screen (image cropped slightly so it would fit here):

Perhaps yours behaves differently because you're not starting with a standard wallpaper.

I don't see it. When I follow the steps, instead of a box to fill with widgets, I see a question "Customize New Wallpaper. Add a new wallpaper to make edits, add widgets ..." "Add New" "Cancel."

I'd like to keep my existing wallpaper.

After tapping Customize, the question box pops up. If I choose “Add New” a new wallpaper is created. I don’t see the box under the time that the instructions cite.
