How to reorder photos after storing on flashdrive

Hi. I've just copied nearly 6000 photos to a flashdrive in preparation for upgrading system on my mac. They are now all completely mixed up datewise etc on the flash. Only solutions on forum i can see are for just a few photos. It would take me years to sort them again. If I have to reload them from drive i assume they will be in the same mixed up order. Any suggestions? Thanks

By "copied" do you mean File>Export in the Photos app? If so, the first choice will export the edited version of the image, and Finder will show the date of the export. But the metadata still has the "capture date" imbedded in it. If you re-import that picture (and maybe keep your fingers crossed) Photos should show that original captured date.

If you choose File>Export>Unmodified Originals, then the un-edited original file will be exported, and Finder will show the capture date as the creation date.

The unmodified originals won't have captions, keywords, and other things that you may have added. If you haven't added anything, there's no difference, except for the date shown in the Finder.

Hi. Thanks for reply. Chronological would be simplest (it's how they are on mac) but not sure how to do this with them now they are on the memory stick. Not done this before. They are all shown as having been added today. If I try to sort by date created etc they move around but still no relation to the original dates they were taken, added , modified or whatever. I have now seen some solutions online about numbering photos before exporting to drive but too late for that now and and too difficult to individually number 6000 pics.
