Installed new xfinity gateway after possible security breach. Works fine but the Apple wifi extenders stopped responding when I changed the wifi password. ???

Xfinity Gateways are an all-in-one modem plus Wi-Fi router. The Apple Airports are their own routers with Wi-Fi. While you can try configuring the Xfinity Gateway to operate in Bridged Mode it can be problematic. You need to enable Bridged Mode in order to continue to use your Apple Airport Wi-Fi routers. Comcast tech support can help you setup Bridged Mode on the Gateway. But it is not exactly ideal.

Apple discontinued the Airport products in 2018, almost 5 years ago. A lot has changed with Wi-Fi since then and it's time to upgrade.

It is best to buy a cable modem that is Xfinity compatible (check with Comcast) and upgrade your Wi-Fi to a more up-to-date solution such as Eero mesh Wi-Fi. Eero you install an App on your phone and you can control the whole setup from the App and it's crazy simple. There's also a product from Google and another from Netgear that are all modern mesh networking.
