If you're missing items from your Mac desktop, check the Finder (Finder > Go > Desktop).

If you have a Time Machine backup, you can restore the missing items: Restore items backed up with Time Machine on Mac - Apple Support.

If you're using iCloud Desktop and Documents, you can recover the missing items from iCloud.com: Recover deleted files on iCloud.com - Apple Support.
