We understand that you can't respond in group messages. Make sure that you have restarted your iPhone and installed the latest update, if you haven't already. This will ensure performance enhancements have been installed and processes restarted.
Make sure that you have MMS and Group Messaging enabled in Settings > Messages and your wireless carrier has provisioned your account for this feature.
