Returning found airpods

I found a pair of Airpods and their case scattered at the side of a road. I brought them home and after posting them on Craigslist and waiting, one day I opened the case. My wife's iPhone beeped with a message that the owner of the device was just sent a map of our house. More waiting and still no one showed up. I eventually reset the Airpods and paired them with my Android phone.

I told the story to a friend and she said the Apple store can find the owner. My question is this: can the Apple store still find the owner even after I reset the device?
