iPhone 12 Pro no text message alert tone

My iPhone 12 and paired Apple Watch 8 recently stopped providing sound alerts to new text messages. I have checked settings for both phone and watch and did not find any that would prevent an audible alert. I looked for online help and recommendations to check settings on phone and watch did not resolve the problem. One suggested making sure I had the latest software on my phone and watch. I have: iOS 16.1.1 and Watch OS 9.1.

I get audible alerts on my watch for other apps (eg, Activity) and on my phone (eg, Call ringtone) but no audible text message alerts on either device. I do get a haptic signal on the watch for text messages.

Hey spdsail,

If you haven't yet, let's try restarting both your iPhone and Apple Watch. A lot of times, restarting the device can help resolve unknown issues.

Also, iOS 16.1.2 has been released recently and we recommend that you update your iPhone and see if you can reproduce the issue: Update your iPhone or iPad

No luck after the upgrade to iOS 16.1.2 and restarting both devices. Last night my watch upgraded to Watch OS 9.2. I again restarted both the iPhone and Apple Watch. A moment ago I received a text message on my phone with tone alert but no message tone alert on the watch. From past experience, I will wait to see if the phone continues to provide a message tone alert. It would be nice to have an audible alert on the watch.

On Dec 3, I restarted both the iPhone and Apple Watch. That "appeared" to correct the problem. However, it was only temporary. I once again lost the sound alerts for text messages on both devices within a day. I restarted both devices again and sound alerts for text messages again stopped within a day. As mentioned previously, I do get sound alerts for other functions. As I type this I received a phone call and both devices provided ring tones. Appears the problem is unique to the text sound alert.

Currently I am downloading iOS 16.1.2, as you suggested. I will again restart both devices and see what happens over the next couple of days.
