How to permanently turn off 12 pt spacing after paragraphs in Pages?

It's my first time using Pages. How do I permanently disable Pages adding extra spacing after a paragraph? I have to manually change this after every paragraph and it's bringing me to tears. I simply want "0 pt" after every "After Paragraph" as my default setting, NOT the "12 pt" font addition. There is no option to disable this as a default setting under Pages -> Preferences or in

Settings.

Just double-click on the 12 to select it, type 0, and press return. This is normally 0 pt in a new blank template, so puzzled how it got there without you setting it.

That After Paragraph value inherits existing After Paragraph values from paragraphs whose associated value is not 0 pt. Either select all of the text in your current document and set After Paragraph to 0 pt, or start over with a new blank template. Then, as long as you do not change this value, or copy/paste content or styles from another source with a non-zero After Paragraph value, it will remain at 0 pt.
