I had already started the update when I received your answer. I am now successfully using Ventura. The move directly from Catalina to Ventura went ok, took over 5 hours.
I'm happy that it worked for you. sometimes skipping macOSes can go sideways, but not always. :)
My iMac, a 2017, 21 1/2", started and stopped several times during the update. I just left it alone. There were several times the screen went totally blank for a while then came back on showing the Apple logo and a bar indicating it was still working.
yes, that is normal while upgrading.
It seems slower than it was, but is slowly speeding up. Keeping my fingers crossed...
I think it will continue to get quicker over the next couple of days until spotlight finishes reindexing itself.

some people have been successful when skipping over a macOS or two, while others have had negative results doing that. IMHO, I would recommend stepping up from Catalina to Big Sur, and then Monterey, before going on to Ventura. especially if you have the time to do so.
