Apple TV won't accept password.

I got the most recent Apple TV 4K. Moved the old one to a TV in the basement. It worked fine for several weeks. Today it asks for my iCloud password. I enter it, the same password that allowed me to sign in to this forum, and it rejects it. The WiFi is working fine as I can eventually get beyond that login screen and the streaming apps work just fine. Have tried the usual first steps of power cycle. What should I try next? But now that I've had several failed login attempts, it may force me to reset my iCloud password and it is used lots of places so that would be painful. Advice?

There was an old thread about this in 2016 but it didn't help.

I had been to that page and none of the scenarios describe my situation. The one possibility is:

  • If you recently changed your Apple ID password, you might need to update your sign-in informationwith iCloud services you use. Make sure that each service is using your updated sign-in information on your device.

But if I can't sign on to the Apple TV box, how can I update its password? I can use that password to sign on to iCloud.com, get email, etc. The only thing I can't do is login to my iCloud account when the Apple TV box demands it.
