"This item is temporarily unavailable"

Wiped my old macbook since I got a new one and want to gift this one. Trying to reinstall an OS and get the option of Maverick popping up. When I put in my APple ID I get the message "This item is temporarily unavailable". Tried wife's Apple ID and it says "incorrect ID or password" even though they're correct and she gets the verification code on her phone.

How else can I get an OS installed so I can gift this device?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.5

Hello Emily,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities. We're happy to look into this with you. We understand that you're running into issues reinstalling the macOS after erasing your MacBook. If you continue to receive error messages, you might try the options provided in article, How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support.

Other macOS installation options

When you install macOS from Recovery, you get the current version of the most recently installed macOS, with some exceptions:

- On an Intel-based Mac, if you use Shift-Option-Command-R during startup, you might be offered the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.

- On an Intel-based Mac, if you use Option-Command-R during startup, you might be offered the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.

- If you just erased your entire startup disk, you might be offered an earlier compatible version of macOS.

- If the Mac logic board was just replaced, you might be offered the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.

You can also use these methods to install macOS, if the macOS is compatible with your Mac:
- Use the Software Update or the App Store
- Use a bootable installer

You may also find the suggested actions in the article below will help as well.
