The subject pretty much says it.
I'd like my phone to automatically silence notifications when I'm in a call without having to manually turn the sound off and on every. single. time.
It looks like there are threads about this as far as 10 years ago at least - is there still not a way to manage this apart from remembering to manually do it? Android developers figured this out ages ago.

No continue putting your phone in silent mode prior to answering the call.
