problems verifying email

I'm trying to sync up iMessage on my iPhone and iMac. I'm being asked to verify my email, but I can't get past this error message:

"Cannot verify email. The request cannot be processed at this time. Please try again later."

iPhone SE, iOS 16

Start with this of M1 or M2 Mac...

Start up a Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode

On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.

After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds.

Press and hold the power button on your Mac until the startup options window appears showing available startup disks and Options.

Select a startup disk.

Press and hold the Shift key, click Continue in Safe Mode, then release the Shift key.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac normally, without pressing and holding any keys during startup.

What is the verify referring to then?

On the Mac...

Start with this if IntelMac...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

What I'm trying to do is sync iMessages on my iPhone and iMac.

First, I tried following these instructions:

https://www.iphonelife.com/content/how-to-sync-messages-iphone-to-mac-ipad

But when I got to step #4, the email address that shows up is my secondary one. I use my main one to log onto Apple things.

So I looked up how to add an email address to iMessage on the iPhone here:

https://www.techbout.com/add-new-email-address-to-imessage-iphone-24629/

When I get to step #2, I am asked to enter my password, which I do. Then I get a "Verify email" screen with a "Resend verification email" button. So I open the email, click on the link, and when I enter my password this time, I get the aforementioned error message.

Also, my Mac is not intel.
