Have the same machine with Ventura 13.0.1 and just as fast or faster than Monterey12.6.1

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drives from loading

3 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

4 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

5 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

6 - If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

7 - Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.

It makes a coherent and readable inventory of both the Hardware and Software used on the computer

The application is free or paid from added features.

There is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This documents describe what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community and Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

Also, unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer, school or bank's servers, they are useless from a privacy standpoint.  Read these two articles: Public VPN's are anything but private and Former Malware Distributor Kape Technologies Now Owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access, Zenmate, and a Collection of VPN “Review” Websites

In you situation and specific to Third Party Protections

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS,  is an invitation for disaster and comprise the Operating System

Certain Applications maybe available on the Apple Apps Store - this only means the Developer is prepared to pay Apple a portion on each sale. What the Application may do to the computer is up to the User to check this out before purchase

Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions

This will include CleanMyMac , This will include BitDefender

This will included Norton Antivirus , Sophos Av Software

Hi thanks for the reply. I did find

  • bitdefender (which was interesting as i bought the computer in 2020 brand new from Apple and it was installed in 2019
  • surf shark VPN

i just dragged them to the garbage and emptied and restarted... hopefully there was nothing else to do...

I think it helped b/c i am using Safari now and it seems to work!

Thanks again!

I had this problem after Ventura was installed. I cleared cookies and did all the usual but it did not work. All worked well with Chrome but safari so slow and sites taking forever to load. I have antivirus software installed with AVG which includes various levels of protection to prevent scammers and hackers. One of these layers is their 'web shield" that "blocks web and unsafe downloads". I turned it off and suddenly Safari was working normally, and incredible on turning AVG web shield back on Safari continues to be OK (so far!).

So, if you have any third party VPN, virus scanner, hacking protection then try turning it off or uninstalling and seeing if Safari works OK. I think this is part of the protection built in with Safari which is interfering with any other third party software.

Hence the Safemode trick should also work.

I hope this helps.

Sorry to pehpsr dampen the spirits but just Drag and Drop to Trash may have left a lot of elements of either or both application still installed on the computer.

" Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions  " doing otherwise may make the clean up even more complex

Suggestion and purely optional to get find all parts still installed on the computer.

This especially for BitDefender as it has been known to install Kernel Extensions that are not easily removed .

Users choice a respect that.

But all to often, some not all users, are prepared to install Disk Cleaners, Disk Optimizers and or AntiVirus software and think this will work too.

Arrive at one’s own conclusions

should tge user decided to run the Etrecheck application at a later time, we are more than willing to review it and offer suggestions

Etrecheck is my go to whenever I’ve any issues or suspicions. My profession can potentially put me at risk for nearly anything. I do not use any AV of any kind. I mess with a lot of open-source software and programs and I’ve had one scare with my Mac. But it was my own carelessness. At that time I almost installed an AV but I’m glad I didn’t. Etrecheck got the job done and was super easy to uninstall. I keep a copy of the .dmg file on a flash drive when I need it.
