How do I kill an application that has frozen on the eternal pinwheel? Specifically, Acrobat Reader froze on a search and I don’t know how to end the process. If I was on a Windows platform, I could go to Task Manager and end the offending task, but I don’t know the Apple equivalent.

Have you tried the "Force Quit" item on the Apple menu (top left corner of the screen)?

I’m sorry I wasn’t clear—the freezing extended to accessing menus as well. I think the magic [tab+command] key combo is probably the approach I need. If I could use the menus, your idea would be my first choice.
