Email reloading unread messages

Help! My email app keeps reloading unread emails. It’s a gmail account. Using iPhone 13 which is presently updated to iOS 16.2.

They appear to be the same emails I’m deleting over and over. It started a week ago when 3k+ emails loaded out of nowhere. They were previously deleted emails.

Since then I have tried:

-re-deleting them (sometimes I can get it down to the 800s but then they load again),

-hard closing all apps

-restarting phone,

-turning email off in settings + restarting phone and then turning email back on

-deleting emailing account + restarting phone + re-adding email account

-deleting beta profile (though that hadn’t caused trouble in the weeks prior)

NONE of these have helped. In fact I got it to stop loading 3k emails and only 800 but the last step put me back at 3k.

ugh!!! Any help appreciated!
