Mac won't autocorrect 'hte'

This has been going on for way too long and I'm hoping someone can help me.

For whatever reason, the last two Macs I've had have stopped autocorrecting the word 'hte'. I could of course just learn how to type 'the' but I feel like since the computer is autocorrecting everything else I type, I'm not sure why it is so difficult to correct this obvious typo. This is seemingly the only word my Mac struggles with.

Has anyone else experienced this and has a solution?

Thoughts anyone? Thanks!

I could make a text substitution via keyboard in System Preferences but this would only work for certain apps (and it wouldn't cover all the different permutations that I would need like Hte etc.) I've tried looking and I think the word isn't in my dictionary and I can't 'unlearn' hte so I'm not sure what's wrong.

(Currently using a Big Sur OS but this has happened across operating systems for me)

Hello thistempacct,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help you get the most from typing on your Mac. You can unlearn the spelling of the word, which should help autocorrection catch the mistake and resolve the issue.

See here:

"Remove a word from the spelling dictionary: Control-click a word, then choose Unlearn Spelling."

This Apple Support page has the full details: Check spelling and grammar on Mac - Apple Support

We hope adjusting these steps can help prevent the word from incorrectly being typed since autocorrection should correct the mistake.

Cheers!

Hello thistempacct,

Thanks for that screenshot. One possible reason it isn't showing up as a misspelled word is because it was learned, instead of added the dictionary inadvertently.

The article provided has the steps: "Remove a word from the spelling dictionary: Control-click a word, then choose Unlearn Spelling." This worked for us in Pages, for every word we learned, then attempted to unlearn.

If that option isn't coming up, please tell us what app you are in, and we can do they best to find info about it.

You can also try making up a keyboard shortcut. When you type in hte or Hte, it will automatically change to the or The: Mac keyboard shortcuts - Apple Support

Thanks.

Hi there!

That picture is from Mac's built-in "Notes" application which doesn't have this option. The same menu shows up in Mac Mail and TextEdit (as I'm sure in others).

The problem with a keyboard shortcut is not every time I type 'hte' I want it changed (for example, in the word firefighter) - not to mention the keyboard shortcut doesn't work in every application I use whereas the spellchecker seems to.
