Automator application keeps asking for access

I've created a workflow in Automator and saved it as an Application to run from a recurring calendar event. The workflow deletes old files from the Downloads folder.

It all works fine (thanks community!), except for everytime it runs, I have to click "OK" to a popup "Delete Downloads" would like to access files in your Downloads folder.

I have given "Delete Downloads" permissions to access the Downloads Folder in System Preferences > Privacy & Security > Files and Folders and restarted my Mac, but I still get asked the question every time.

Anyone got any ideas?

It should work, it seems that you did everything right.

Try granting your application “Full Disk Access” and see if that solves the issue.

Not sure how to edit/ delete my previous comment...

Thanks for the prompt response.

It is now working even with only File and Folders access (i.e. not Full Disk Access).

I think the issue was because every time the script is changed (saved), it seems to be considered a new application (even if it has the same name and location).

This means that I have to run the application manually after each save and allow permission to access the Download folder (again).

I'm not going to investigate further, but if others are having similar problems and the above doesn't help, it may be that the cause is a combination of:

  • Saving, but not quitting the Automator app when making changes to the disk access in System Settings.
  • Not running the script Application manually after saving changes (and allowing access when asked).
  • Not creating a new calendar event (and reselecting the script file after a saved change).

Originally, I was keeping the script open to modify the days for testing purposes and saving it after each change and kept modifying the time of the calendar event to test it.

A better way to test is to move back the files to the Downloads folder (from the Bin) after each run and don't keep changing the script and event time.
