aol goes offline in mail

I useMail on a 2020 iMac running Ventura for two accounts: iCloud and an old Verizon.net e-mail that has since migrated to AOL servers. I would ditch the Verizon account except that it is intimately bound up with my logon ID for banks, shops and a million other things. After the AOL migration, it still works fine on the Mac (I even got to keep the "verizon.net" address) but every once in a while, for no apparent reason, the Verizon/AOL account shows up as "offline" in the sidebar. Clicking the command to go back online has no effect. Unlike older versions, there are few user-defined server settings in Mail these days, and the server names and passwords are correct. The problem usually fixes itself after a few minutes or hours. When I go to the AOL web page to see the inbox, I can see that new messages are there. But it's as if Mail simply can't get online to retrieve them. Any hints to what's causing this?

Hi BPpark,

Since you are unable to connect to this specific email account, it would be helpful to follow the steps linked below, including:

"Remove your email account, then add it back

If no other solutions work, follow these steps:

  1. Remove your email account in Mail.
  2. Add your email account in Mail again.
  3. Try to send and receive email."

If you can’t send or receive email on your Mac

Using Connection Doctor could also help share some insight on what account settings may need to be changed.

Use Connection Doctor in Mail on Mac

Cheers.

Thanks, but I'm afraid it's not that simple. It's not that I "can't" send or receive mail, it's that the warning symbol indicating an account is offline (the exclamation point within the triangle) comes on for the Verizon/AOL account at random, and goes off at random. Sometimes, during these periods, Ii can send and receive through that account. Sometimes I can't. At the moment, the warning is on, but that account can send and receive mail. However the connection doctor for the Verizon/AOL account says "Trying to log into this IMAP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct." Verfy how? Any why would it have changed from an hour ago, when the warning symbol wasn't there???
