upgrade for Yosemite 10.10.5

My iMac is dated 2013 and I'm guilty of hanging on to Yosemite 10.10.5 because of its convenience. But I must update in order to support a new chrome browser. I get a message saying no updates are available. Anyone know of a way I can get at least a 10.11, El Capitan or later. I'm 83, no technophobe but somewhat limited in comprehension as to how to accomplish this. That said, I'm loaded with photos and documents that need backing up so how to do that is needed, perhaps with the OMNI photostick?

Thanks,

Eleisa

If you’re not sure how to back up your data before upgrading- use Time Machine. It’s super easy and is included with Yosemite and all other macOS. You do need an external drive, ideally at least twice the size of your current hard drive. Usually those are affordable and easy to find.

Jollie0 you replied to me Dec 3rd 2022 and I followed your directions with the help of my son. It seemed to work and I was able to upgrade my 2013 iMac to Catalina with Niel's help. However the first backup while on Catalina failed, my son came again and got it going once more. Yesterday and today I got two messages: Backup complete Time Machine has finished the first backup to "My passport." Then: Backup Failed Time Machine couldn't back up to "My Passport." My son is out of town so any idea what might be happening here?

Thanks,

Niel, you replied to me Dec 3rd 2022 and I followed your directions with the help of my son. It seemed to work and backed up fine so I was able to upgrade my 2013 iMac to Catalina. Is "My Passport" that 32 bit software you warned me about?

Thanks,
