Downloaded photos from camera not showing in iPhoto on macbook

I downloaded my vacation photos from my Canon Rebel to my MacBook (2017) just as I’ve done dozens of times. I watched them as they downloaded and appeared one by one in the Photos app on my MacBook. I got the message “Download Complete” so I turned off my camera and disconnected, just as I always do. Then I went to look at the photos and they’re nowhere to be found. Not in Library, not in Recents, not in Imports, not in iCloud. I’m heartbroken at the thought of losing these pictures. Any ideas on where they might be? I mean, it said “Download Complete.” Seems they would have to be somewhere.

TIA

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.6

The smart album things works if the date is off by 20 years, not 1 day.

Where is your Library located?

You can try to start in safe mode:

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support (LB)

This can sometimes solve strange problems like this.

If you have not used the card since the download, you can see if you can get some recovery software. Often (for a brand name card!) the mfg has some software available on their website.

Try a Smart Album

Create Smart Albums to group photos automatically in Photos on Mac - Apple Support (LB)

Also, NEVER choose delete after download because of this exact situation. Always make sure the Photos show up and can be accessed - double click one so it goes full size - before deleting from the card. I just go ahead and low-level format in camera, so I *have* to be careful. 8^)
