Hello DoonBoomPow,
Are you using the AirPods with an iPhone for the calls? If so, be sure to check for any available iOS updates for the device to ensure it has the latest improvements for the device, and the AirPods should update automatically when used with an iOS device: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
It can also help to try cleaning the AirPods. Suggestions for how to clean them can be found here: How to clean your AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and EarPods - Apple Support
Clean the microphone and speaker meshes gently with a dry cotton swab. Remove any debris from the meshes with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush.
Resetting the AirPods can also help with some issues that crop up: How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support

2. Wait 30 seconds.

7. Reconnect your AirPods: With your AirPods in their charging case and the lid open, place your AirPods close to your iPhone or iPad. Follow the steps on your device's screen.
You may also isolate it down further by testing the microphone while recording a brief voice memo in the included Voice Memos app, as that'll help to see if it's specific to the calls.
Cheers.
