Macbook Pro 16 inch 2021 Battery Drain while using Chrome?

Hi guys, using Chrome seems to be draining the batter at alarming rates. Instead of the battery lasting at least 10 hours, it will drain it in 4. Yes, using Safari may work for some people but my job functions utilizes Google technologies (ie, Sheets, Docs, etc) so Chrome is vital to optimize the work output. Are other people having this same issue?

Hey there Just_Michael,

While any app will drain the battery, the battery life will also depend upon many factors.

In regards to just a web browser in relation to battery life, things like going to websites that have photos/videos heavily used, lots of ads, things syncing constantly as you mentioned using some of the features built-in to Google Chrome, etc. will all factor into using the battery. These details are expected behavior for any web browser.

With the above in mind, we wanted to gather more details about what's happening, along with helping to get the most out of the battery:

  1. Have you noticed that the battery drains quicker when using Google Chrome vs. when using the built-in Safari browser?
  2. Any app updates for Google Chrome available? If you're unsure of how to check, you'll need to reach out to Google Support for the steps.
  3. If you have a compatible Mac model, the latest version is macOS 13.0.1. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.
  4. We also recommend following all of the battery tips for your MacBook listed in this link, if you haven't been already following them all: Batteries - Maximizing Performance
  5. You can also use the steps in this link to View Battery Usage History on a Mac notebook to see what's been using the most battery in your Mac.

Cheers!

If you MUST use Chrome, then Plug it in.

That computer is a battery-CAPABLE device. It is not optimized as a battery-operated device. (It is NOT an iPhone.)

Your computer performs best when connected to AC power. It can use the full output of the Power Adapter AND when doing especially challenging work will also freely "borrow" power from the battery. In some cases, even with the power adapter connected, the charged state may even decline during stressful work.

When used only on battery, your computer has no extra cushion of power, and may perform more slowly. However, for ordinary non-stressful tasks this may not be objectionable (possibly not even noticeable.)

In general, you should ALWAYS connect AC power when it is possible to do so, and only run on batteries (which could be somewhat slower) when no AC sources are at hand. Your Mac will NEVER over-charge.
