I find it increasingly hard to read small, faint fonts on the screen. New glasses cannot help beyond a certain point. Is there any way to make them larger, and with more contrast?

You can make the fonts bigger for everything:

Make it easier to see what’s on the screen of your Mac - Apple Support

You can also try dark mode and light mode to see which is easier.

I had the same problem. How I solved it is the following;

1 - in System/Appearance settings pane I turned on Dark Mode. That gives me white text against a back background.

2 - in System/Displays I set the screen resolution to one step to the left of the Default setting.

3 - in System/Accessibility/Display is enabled Reduced Motion and Increase Contrast as well as larger Menu bar size and made the pointer larger and easier to see.

4 - for Safari I use the extension Noir from the App store.

For me it's made a whole world of difference.
