MacBook Pro 2019 sometimes fails to recognize Samsung Odyssey G9 after waking up until SMC reset is performed

My MacBook Pro (16-in 2019, 2.4GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, AMD Radeo Pro 5500M 8 GB Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB running Ventura 13.0.1) is connected to my SAMSUNG 49” Odyssey G9 (LC49G95T) via a "Silkland USB C to DisplayPort 1.4 Cable [8K@60Hz, 4K@144Hz 120Hz, 2K@240Hz], 5K Type C to DP 1.4 Cable, [32.4 Gbps, Thunderbolt 4/3 Compatible]"

The issue is that the laptop sometimes fail to recognize the monitor after waking up. This happens randomly. I can wake up the laptop several times in a row, then all of a sudden, the laptop fill fail to recognize the monitor. Plugging and unplugging the USB-C cable does not work. Turning the monitor on/off does not work. Restarting the laptop does not make it recognize the monitor. The only way to get the monitor recognized again is to shutdown the laptop, then restart WHILE resetting the SMC. This issue occurred before upgrading to Ventura 13.0.1, and is also occurring for a different, albeit identical, laptop.

I would love to understand how to resolve this issue as it's extremely frustrating to having to come back to your laptop, trying to get to work and instead having to deal with the unrecognized monitor issue.

Hi mimemiminami,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities!

Since this is happening with multiple Mac's this may be isolated to the display itself.

You may want to confirm there are no firmware updates that need to be installed for the display by reaching out to the manufacture.

You can also follow the steps in this article: If your external display isn't detected or appears blurry when connected to your Mac - Apple Support to troubleshoot this issue.

If your display is blank or not detected

Try these steps if you don't see an image on your display.

Check your cable or adapter

Disconnect the cable from your external display from your Mac, then reconnect it. If the cable from your external display doesn't connect to the ports on your Mac, you can use a USB-C or Thunderbolt adapter. If you're using a USB-C or Thunderbolt adapter to connect a display, the adapter must be compliant with DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt / USB 4.
Check how many displays you can connect

If you're connecting multiple displays to your Mac, use the Tech Specs page to find out how many external displays your Mac supports.

1. Choose Apple menu  > About This Mac, double-click your serial number, then press Command-C to copy it.
2. Go to the Tech Specs page, click the Search Tech Specs bar, press Command-V to enter your computer's serial number, then click Search.
3. Click the specs page for your Mac. The number of displays your Mac supports appears under Video Support or Graphics.

Hope that helps!
