1628: Failed to Complete Installation

Howdy all. I was having a 1607 error a couple weeks back, got that fixed thanks to b noir, but immediately got a 1628 error that I haven't been able to fix.

I've tried the suggestions on this 1628 error that this link gives you:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976

-I didn't find any process running on my computer of the install processes they had listed, are there other processes that might be causing my 1628 error?

-I've cleaned out every temp folder on both of my hard drives except for some temporary internet folders that it doesn't allow me to delete for some reason.

-When I try to install the windows installer engine on my computer I get a "the specified service already exists" message.

My anti-virus program that I have is called avg free edition, but I have been disabling anything on it that would be interfering, at least as far as I know, when I go to do installs.

An attempt at a stand alone Quicktime install will also give me the 1628 error.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

hi cddubs!

good lord ... sorry to hear that you're still having trouble.

hmmm. let's try some spring-cleaning and maintenance to see if that turns up anything. (apologies if we've already tried this off in the other threads).

download some fresh definitions and conduct vigorous spyware and virus scans. do a disk cleanup, run your favorite disk checking/repair utility, and then do a disk defrag. reboot.

did that pick up anything? does the QT standalone go through after that?

keep us posted. if this doesn't work, i'll go through and review the earlier threads again and we can start working through some of the rarer possibilities with the 1628.

hi cdubs!

yep, MSCONFIG is an XP thing.

let's try booting into safe mode instead. will the install go through from inside one of the safe mode options?

Description of Safe Boot Mode in Windows 2000

... but if no joy with those, let's try method 1 from this document:

How to resolve Common "Windows Installer" Problems

... and if no joy with that, let's just check up on the possibility that Michael describes here (sorry, i'm not sure whether or not i've already directed you to this one):

ok, tried all 3, here's what happened:

safe boot: i got a 1607 error when i went to install it

method 1: i had done that before, did it again to check, didn't make a difference.

and option #3: not quite sure if i'm understanding what this guy did, but my temp folder path seems to be correct(D:\Documents and settings\username\local settings\temp)?

good lord. okay, your temp directory location sounds fine.

i don't like the continued 1607s showing up under odd circumstances.

let's check on another creepy possibility. on a few machines an MS security hotfix (of all things) was butchering people's Windows Installers. in at least one case that manifested as a 1607 on an itunes install. 1628s can also indicate strange Windows Installer problems (which is why we've been trying that method 1 trick). so check to see if your PC is displaying any of the symptoms described in this MS KB doc:

Systems that have changed the default Access Control List permissions on the %windir%\registration directory may experience various problems after you install the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-051 for COM+ and MS DTC

... keep us posted ...

I haven't had any of those problems that they listed, I think that's another thing I checked before.

The thing that really puzzles me is I've done a couple installs lately of other programs that use installshield and they work fine, no problems whatsoever. it's just itunes and quicktime that won't work, along with my dvd/rw drive ever since i deleted the old versions of itunes but that's another issue in itself right.

thanks for the continued help!

gaah. I'd better stop dwelling on the Windows Installer possibilities quite so much, then.

let's try to get an installer log on your problem to the Apple Engineers. follow the instructions in the following toonz post:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1304835#1304835

in the meantime, maybe tell me a bit more about your CD drive problems? some of those are due to unusual registry filter conflicts. so maybe if we can get that sorted out, we might be able to make some more progress with this 1628.

(a low percentage play ... but it's a play ...)

howdy b noir,

the error code i'm getting for both of my drives is:

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

have deleted drivers, reinstalled, didn't do any good.

also, i sent the log to an apple engineer on friday, should i have heard from them by now or ?

thanks for the continued help

The error message occurs at run time usually when you are trying to uninstall, repair, or update an installation. This error message is caused by the Windows Installer Service and is often caused by the installation itself.

Fix

This error message is often caused when the uninstallation log file becomes corrupt. This can happen if the installation is corrupt or an issue on the computer has caused this. To fix this, end the process that is running IDriver.exe via the Task Manager. Follow these steps to do this:
Refer to the article Detect and End Previously Running Installation Processes to end the IDriver.exe process. http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108393
Run the installation again to see if the error still occurs.

This error can also occur if the Windows Installer Service is not properly configured on your computer. It can also happen if the installation is created with a newer version of the Windows Installer Service, and your computer has an older version. To fix this issue, install the latest Windows Installer Service on your computer using these steps:
http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108201
to download and install the latest Windows Installer Service.
Reboot your computer.
Run the installation again to see if the error continues to occur.

This error message may also occur if a file in the Temp directory is conflicting with the files being used by the installation while it is being run. To fix this, delete the entire contents of the Temp directory using these steps:
Refer to the article Clean the Temp Directory to clean the Temp directory. http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108334 Run the installation again to see if the issue is resolved.
Another reason your installation may not run is changes to your computer caused by recent updates. For example, updates to your operating system may cause installations created prior to the update to fail. You may want to uninstall any recent updates, install your application, and reinstall the update. WARNING: You should check with the software vendor who created the update to ensure no adverse affects will result from uninstalling the update.
