SD Card Reader only works once (after a reboot)

After a reboot of my macbook pro, the SD card reader will work to read the first card I insert, but if I remove that card and try another, it will not recognize in either finder or disk utility. It's highly inconvenient to reboot the Macbook every time I want to use an SD card but can't seem to find a solution online.

Have you tried basic troubleshooting with safe mode?

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support (Takes longer time to boot)

NoteSafe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed.
