Time Machine set up disk usage limit option, why would you use this?

Why would you want to use the disk usage limit option when setting up Time Machine?

Thanks Barney-15E, your reply actually echoes what I have done. Previously had a larger drive, where I simply set up a separate volume for Time Machine backups. Since that failed, I purchased a drive of a more appropriate size for Time Machine. Thinking if I need more space I would simply get a separate drive, putting my eggs into two different baskets.

If you're inclined to reply, again, I am curious, what's the difference between creating a separate disk volume and using the disk limit option show or if you know where I can read about this.
