A Volume by default shares all of the storage available to the container (partition). If you had five volumes on a 1TB drive, they’d all have access to the full 1TB, short what others had used. A quota restricts the amount available to that volume. It is effectively the same as if you partitioned the drive.
If you were using a very large drive and wanted to save space for other things.
I’d just get an appropriately sized drive, though.
Thanks Barney-15E, your reply actually echoes what I have done. Previously had a larger drive, where I simply set up a separate volume for Time Machine backups. Since that failed, I purchased a drive of a more appropriate size for Time Machine. Thinking if I need more space I would simply get a separate drive, putting my eggs into two different baskets.
If you're inclined to reply, again, I am curious, what's the difference between creating a separate disk volume and using the disk limit option show or if you know where I can read about this.
