Using Roman numerals and numbers in a Table of Contents

"You can add page numbers to your document that automatically adjust as pages are added or deleted. You can add a page number to a header or footer on your page, or elsewhere in the document–for example, within body text or in an object."

Change the starting number and number style

Once you’ve added page numbers, you can change the starting page number and change the number style for a section in a word-processing document or for a page in a page layout document.

1. Do one of the following:

• In a word-processing document: Click  in the toolbar, then click the Section tab at the top of the sidebar.

• In a page layout document: Click in the corner of the page you want to edit (so nothing is selected on the page), then click  in the toolbar. If the top of the sidebar doesn’t say Page, make sure nothing is selected on the page, then try again.

2. Under Page Numbering, do any of the following:

• Change the number format: Click the Format pop-up menu and choose a numbering style.

• Set the starting page number: Choose whether you want to continue numbering from the previous page or section, or set a different starting number.

If the next page in your document has Match Previous Page turned on, its page number increments to the next number and uses the numbering style of this page.

TOCs in Pages are generated automatically using the headings and sub headings inserted in the documents.

If you can set the main headings Style to include a Roman numeral, and the styles for the subheadings to use Arabic numerals, Pages may be able to collect the style with each heading, and apply it to the TOC entry for that level.

If that's not successful, you may have to build the TOC manually, with the numbers added as text.

Do you know if this requirement is part of a widely accepted and applied requirement for the type of document your wife has had assigned, or is it the requirement of only a minority of persons, departments or organizations in this field?

If it is widespread, I'd suggest clicking on the Provide Pages Feedback menu item in the Pages menu and requesting that this ability be added to Pages' feature set.

If it is not widespread, you could still, and probably should still make the request. Its lack is an issue for anyone using Pages to complete an assignment with similar specifications, and adding the capability would make those lives easier (and less stressful).
