Refurbished MacBook Pro

I recently ordered a Apple MacBook Pro 13 inch laptop out of a magazine. When I received it, I didn’t realize it was refurbished. The Model # is A1278 so it’s an older laptop. It says that the product has been factory renewed to original quality. Is it safe to use this laptop? Do I need to install antivirus software on it? I haven’t even used the laptop yet because I’m kind of nervous to use it because I don’t know much about it.
