Is there a way to see HDCP status from the Mac side ?
HDCP is a demon that wreaks havoc in live production or presentation environments, causing some production displays to just go black while others will randomly/briefly flash the signal before reverting to a "no signal" type of display--which mimics the behavior of bad connections or bad cables.
There is no industry standard behavior to easily detect this problem, such as an error window that says "HDCP Protected Signal." Instead creators and technicians are left to try and troubleshoot a system that has no definitive way to prove the source of the problem.
To make matters worse, Apple enables HDCP by default even when there is no protected content being played. It makes sense to have HDCP working when playing iTunes movies, Netflix, etc to connected displays. But even if you are just trying to show your own home-brew VJ graphics or perhaps just a spreadsheet, Apple assumes HDCP is needed and enables it by default, thus preventing it from being displayed on many devices used in a live production workflow.
In a perfect world, Apple would provide a utility to disable the HDCP handshake (or allow a 3rd party app to do the same); this wouldn't allow a risk for piracy because Netflix etc. would simply refuse to play when a non-HDCP-compliant device was detected. But we all know Apple won't allow this because Apple believes they know better than the end users. (Take the orange dot in the corner of the screen, for example.)
But... what would be incredibly helpful would be a way at the very least to check & display the HDCP status for connected displays. I've searched in vain for a 3rd party app to do this--just display the HDCP status. I'd love to know if someone has app, solution, or even instructions for digging into Terminal to find this information.
Thank you.
