Watch text notifications

It is my understanding that with the phone off notifications go to the watch, and if the phone is on then not to the watch. There are times when I am actively using my phone and get a text alert on my watch, and no notification (i.e. banner) on the phone. With other apps the notifications seem to work fine.

I have notifications set to "custom" not "mirror" for texts on the watch app.

Any settings I should check? I have everything set per Notifications on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

Your understanding is correct, and maybe some third party apps may mess up the pairing, though they should not. Security and VPN apps can wreak havoc

I never saw any advantage in not mirroring the iphone.

Unpairing and setting up again may help with glitches.
