after choosing to use handwriting recognition as input method, the soft/floating keyboard becomes persistent on the screen (ios 16). I can hide it temporarily by clicking the hide button (bottom right). but once i start typing on the physical keyboard again the soft/floating keyboard pops up again. how do I hide it permanently? thanks

To clarify are you referring to Scribble with an Apple Pencil?
If so, and the software keyboard pops back up specifically when using the Apple Pencil this would be expected behavior. If you'd like, you can disable the software keyboard under Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Assistive Touch > Pointer Devices, toggle off Show Onscreen Keyboard.
We'd also recommend ensuring that the physical keyboard has full access under Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards.
