Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) (2021) is not compatible with non-HomeKit Thread devices.

Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) (2022) is compatible with non-HomeKit Thread devices.

Thread is a non-Wifi wireless mesh communication protocol. Thread is low bandwidth, so not really suitable for audio or video. More like control signals (lock-unlock, open-close, on-standby, mode x-y-z).

Matter is the overarching interoperability ‘language’ to make devices independent of separate native HomeKit support.

You’ll need an Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) for Matter support.
