Check the documentation for the printer. I just got a new HP that is AirPrint compatible, but I had to install an HP app on my phone to configure the printer for AirPrint. This was a new experience, because previous printers “just worked”.

Hi,
A Brother MFC-L2710DW is listed as supported in About AirPrint - Apple Support. An AirPrint-enabled printer is compatible with iOS, and can be used without an additional app, provided that the printer and the iPhone are connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router).
AirPrint works with wireless (Wi-Fi) or wired (Ethernet) network connections. Since the MFC-L2710DW has an Ethernet port (in addition to Wi-Fi), you could choose to wire the printer to one of the LAN ports of the Wi-Fi router instead of using a wireless connection. The iPhone would be wirelessly connected to the same router.
Do not use a direct wireless connection (Wi-Fi Direct) between the printer and the iPhone. Always connect via a Wi-Fi router (infrastructure mode).
See the following article for details: Use AirPrint to print from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If there is a problem with AirPrint device discovery, you could try the following procedure (in this order, with these waiting times): Power off the Wi-Fi router, the printer, the iPhone, and all other connected devices/computers. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the router. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the printer. Wait a minute or two. Power on the iPhone. Finally, power on all other devices/computers.
I have discovered that HP Smart is a configuration utility; it is not needed once the printer is set up. I installed it on one iOS device, set up the printer, and I can print from all of my other devices without it.
Hi Lawrence Finch,
Yes, a number of HP printers appear to require HP Smart, at least for setup and ink management purposes. It may differ depending on the chosen extra services (HP+, etc). If additional software is an absolute requirement, it should not really be compatible with the idea behind AirPrint. For example, macOS 10.13 High Sierra and earlier Macs cannot be used since HP Smart for Desktop needs macOS 10.14 Mojave or higher.
