Steps counts very different (phone vs watch vs history)

After setting up a new Apple Watch (8), the Health app on my phone (ios12, 16.1.2) and the Fitness app on the watch list my steps way lower than they should be (and way lower than day to day in the past).

For example, a 3rd party step counter app on my phone AND watch (Stepz) says over 8000 steps this morning, which is typical. Apple's Health (phone) and Fitness (watch) say 3500.

I've had Stepz as a "data source" in Heath for years, so why so different?

Please use any device that you trust and meets your requirement. Since the difference is so large you can always logically comnpare and decide which gives better result based on your past historical data.

Your health is more important than these comparisons and technicalities.
