Calendar app still shows cancelled Exchange events

The only way I have figured out how to remove canceled meetings from my calendar app which is synced with my Exchange work account is to unsubscribe and re-subscribe to the calendar. How come canceled meetings still show up and is there a better/easier way to remove them?

Hi there Andrman,

While you may need to contact Microsoft Support regarding this issue, upon reviewing the conversation so far, we wanted to confirm more details to better understand what's happening, along with ruling out some other possible causes:

  1. You mentioned that when a meeting is canceled for your Exchange account, it shows the cancellation on both the Outlook and OWA apps, but remains within the Calendar app. That being said, does it show as 'canceled' in the Calendar app, or does it show as if it hasn't even registered the event was canceled?
  2. Was there a time when Calendar did sync without any issues with your Exchange account, and if yes, when did this first start?
  3. Do you have other accounts syncing with Calendar, and if you do, are there any issues with those events?
  4. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section 'Restart' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac
  5. We see you have a Mac model that is compatible with macOS Ventura 13.1, but you have macOS Monterey 12.6 installed. While it's recommended to always keep your devices up to date, we wanted to make sure you had at least the latest version that's currently installed on your Mac, which would be macOS Monterey 12.6.2. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.

Cheers!

Hi bruno75,

  1. Within the Calendar app it shows as though I still have accepted the meeting and it hasn't been cancelled.
  2. My memory is vague but I recall this being an issue in macOS 12.5, perhaps earlier than that. The Calendar sync does work as expected if I deactivate and then re-activate this Exchange account in the Calendar app preferences. But this is temporary.
  3. I have iCloud and Google Calendars which function as expected, the issue is isolated to my Exchange account.
  4. I will attempt a restart the next time I encounter the issue. But the workaround of deactivating and then re-activating the calendar is quicker so that's what I have been using up till now.
  5. This machine is under company policies so I cannot upgrade to macOS Ventura until some point in the coming weeks. I will continue testing after that upgrade.

One other possible cause I investigated was two-factor authentication. Our company network utilizes Microsoft two-factor authentication and it is required after a set period of time. I do not get the two-factor prompt when deactivating and re-activating the calendar in app preferences, but as I said in #2 the syncing does seem to consistently begin functioning again after re-activating.

But it does seem possible this issue is not limited to cancelled events, and the sync is stopping entirely after a period of time. I will test this possibility the next time I notice it has stopped syncing.

Thank you Dorian. This situation occurs with meeting invitations, after I have accepted and then are subsequently cancelled by the original sender.

Exchange sends out a cancellation, which I then accept using the Outlook Web App. This appears to remove it from my Exchange calendar, and it disappears from OWA and the Outlook desktop app. But the event remains on my synced calendar in the Calendar app.

Hi Andrman,

Is the meeting being canceled from a different device, and just not syncing to the Mac?

Instead of deleting the calendar and adding it back, do you not see the option for delete? This is found in the main Calendar User Guide, Add, modify, or delete events in Calendar on Mac.

Delete an event
In the Calendar app  on your Mac, do one of the following:

• Select the event, then press the Delete key.
•. If you receive a calendar event from an unknown sender, you can report it as junk and delete it without notifying the sender. Double-click the event, click Report Junk, then click Delete and Report Junk.

Reach back out if you still need help, and let us know more about what device is being used when canceling, and the steps taken.

Take care!
