Manually Switching Primary Towers

Metro by T-Mobile user here,

after having much difficulty and unable to use data from my primary tower, and only able to get data via Wi-Fi, I connected with my carrier via 611 and was told that cell phone users are unable to choose manually their PRIMARY tower with their cell phone. That this is done solely by the carrier.

She also told me my current tower was being upgraded to 5G from 3G and she switched me to another tower which was relatively close giving me four full bars. She then stated once the repairs were done on my primary tower I would be automatically switched back.

My question is,

” is there a way we can manually choose our home base primary tower? “

No. Towers are chosen by algorithm, based on measured signal strength and network utilization. Your phone will automatically connect to the tower that has the strongest signal and that has available capacity for your phone. You many not connect to the same tower every time. But if you are home, do you have Wi-Fi calling enabled? It will route your calls over your Wi-Fi network.

I do understand about the algorithm when traveling and moving about. I’m basically talking about the 911 location base home tower location, they assign based on your address.

(or the address given to the carrier service)

it seemed to me that with them, knowing the tower was being upgraded and not in service they would have switched me to a working tower automatically.(apparently tower upgrades are not included in the algorithm.)

however, my voice continue to work, just not data.
